ROADSIDE ALMANAC
IState IRVM Plan  |  County IRVM Plan template  |  County Roadside Contacts  |  IRVM Office

Kirk Henderson, State IRVM Coordinator, created The Roadside Almanac in 1992.  Sponsored, in part, by the Living Roadway Trust Fund, the booklet continues to serve roadside managers as well as others interested in planting and maintaining healthy, diverse landscapes.  The Almanac is currently out-of-print, but its monthly calendar is available here.

JANUARY

A plan in time saves nine

Outline specific objectives for the coming year.  State them clearly in measurable terms.  In two short months the rush of warm-season activities will begin.  Put together a good plan now and enjoy efficiency and clarity of purpose the rest of the year.

If flashes of insight and creativity occur during the micro-seconds between everyday thoughts, we must allow time for this to happen.  Sit still.  Stare last season in the face and visualize clearly the successes to repeat, mistakes to avoid and problems to solve.  Other winter activities include:

  • Equipment maintenance

  • Seed and herbicide inventories

  • Catch up on professional publications

  • Write articles for local papers

  • Establish and renew landowner contacts

Working with landowners to solve occasional problems will be easier when landowners already understand IRVM and their county's efforts to maintain healthy roadside vegetation.  Educate the public.
